SUMMARY:INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2020
DESCRIPTION:International Youth Day (IYD) is commemorated every year on 12th August. This follows the United Nations General Assembly Resolution in 1999 that endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon\, 8-12 August 1998) to declare 12th August as International Youth Day and be commemorated every year by all Member States. The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender\, Labour\, and Social Development joins the United Nations and the entire world to commemorate International Youth Day 2020.\nThe commemoration of IYD calls upon all of us to focus on the 15 priority areas of the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY) which include; education\, employment\, poverty and hunger\, environment\, drug abuse\, HIV/AIDS\, information and communications technology\, inter-generational issues\, armed conflict\, the mixed impact of globalization\, and the full and effective participation of youth in society and decision-making. Targeting these areas assists governments in responding to the aspirations and demands of youth for a better future for all.\nQN: Why have we adopted the theme: “Youth Engagement for Global Action”.\nThe Government of Uganda adopted the Global IYD 2020 theme “Youth Engagement for Global Action” as proposed by the United Nations. This theme enjoins us to focus on the ways to engage young people against the backdrop of an increasingly polarized world in the face of challenges like COVID-19 outbreak\, climate change\, joblessness\, sexual reproductive health and livelihoods among others.\nAll partners in youth development are expected to showcase how the youth are engaged towards contributing to the development processes of the country and draw lessons on further youth engagement for effective representation\, participation in political\, economic\, and social institutions and processes.\nDespite constituting over 22% of Uganda’s total population\, the youth have not taken advantage of the prevailing conducive legal and policy frameworks to play a pivotal role at all levels. They have low levels of participation which requires deliberate enhancement to further their aspirations.\nEnhancing engagement of youth in all areas of development creates mutual understanding and proper adaptability of policies\, programs\, and processes and most importantly restores harmony and trust in public institutions\, especially by the youth.
